Abstract (en)
On 20 Aug 1455 Francesco Sforza signed a deed legalizing the transfer of what were apparently somewhat disparate palace structures in the heart of Milan to Cosimo de' Medici. The property was at what is now via Bossi, 4. In return for this gift, Cosimo rebuilt and redecorated the original structures, transforming them into a visually unified urban palace. Although this building is usually mentioned only in passing discussions of Medici patronage, it provides an extensive and critically important ensemble that sheds light on Medici-Sforza relations, on shared patronage within the Medici family, on evolving personal iconography in Medici imagery, and on Medici presence in cities other than Florence. Documents appended.
