Reflects upon lists of "master" artists drawn up by Richardson (1715) and Gray (1739-1741). Mannings looks at who is included, who omitted and asks why. Further, he asks what the organization of such lists, the grouping of names and the plotting of their interconnections, tells us about the 18th century's construction of the past.
