Weinsberg, an upper middle-class burgher in Cologne, kept a chronicle or book of recollections which runs to almost 7000 pages. Mining this text, Schmid offers a critical assessment of Weinsberg's motivations as a patron and of his interactions with artists. In addition to the decoration of his home, Weinsberg was long involved in the embellishment of S. Jakob's, Cologne.
