Abstract
(en)
Historical account of the influence of scientific investigation on the conception of artistic creation. Discusses Johann Heinrich Lambert's writings on the representation of landscape and the links between mathematics and art theory; artists as "inventors" of images and experimental modes of representation; images created through chance (e.g., the ink blots of Justinus Kerner); nature as a source for art (e.g., natural stone tiles used in mosaics); and experimentation with the laws of nature in the creation of art (e.g., Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's experimentations with electrostatic energy, and Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni's studies of acoustics, both of which resulted in illustrations that mimic abstract art designs).
