Abstract (en)
Guide to the Castello della Magliana, Rome, the fortified hunting villa of the Renaissance popes, including Innocent VIII, Julius II, and especially Leo X (who died there in 1521). Summarizes the contributions of Antonio Graziadeo, Bramante, Giuliano da Sangallo, and others to the architecture; describes and illustrates the frescoes (now detached and dispersed among various museums) by Raphael and his school. Abandoned in the sixteenth century, the villa was ceded to the Knights of Malta in 1957 and is now a hospital.
