Presents previously unpublished documents (chiefly in the Antici-Mattei archives in Rome, 1594-1882) on the collection of painting created by Ciriaco and Asdrubale Mattei and dispersed in the late 19th c. Provides 29 catalogue entries for early 17th c. paintings treated in the documents, which provide firm dates for three by Caravaggio: Supper at Emmaus: 1601 (London, National Gallery); Capture of Christ: 1602 (Dublin, National Gallery of Ireland); and S. John the Baptist: 1602 (Rome, Pinacoteca Capitolina). Introductory essays trace Mattei patronage and collecting and the decoration of the family palaces.
