Abstract (en)
Survey of the social and political concerns of intellectuals and their relationship to American culture before and after World War II. Discusses Marxism, modernism, and the Popular Front in the 1930s, drawing attention to issues and events that divided left-wing thinkers and led to the non-ideological politics of the 1950s, characterized by centrism and a reconciliatory, tragic modernism. Comments on Harold Rosenberg's notion of action, and the radical, participatory politics that he evoked in writings about Abstract Expressionism.
