Discusses the Armory Show of 1913 in New York and its impact; and examines other influences on the development of modernism in America in the 1910s: Stieglitz and his gallery, and Walter Arensberg and his "salon," which included Duchamp and Picabia. Notes that the importance of Duchamp's arrival in New York for the history of 20th c. American art cannot be overestimated.
