Abstract
(en)
Traces the shift from social concerns in art of the 1930s to Surrealism in the 1940s; notes the relationship of war to the Surrealist, modernist version of reality; argues that Surrealism overtook American art not only because of the presence of its European exponents but because it expressed the current condition and experience of the world.
