Abstract
(en)
Examines Black Mountain's history, its role in the reinterpretation of European modernism and its assimilation into American culture, and its function as a catalyst for the emergence of the American avant-garde after World War II. Lists names of numerous teachers and students in all the arts, noting the important influence of the Europeans, especially Albers, who transmitted Bauhaus theories and ideas and fostered abstraction; and discusses the summer sessions in the arts, especially in 1952, when Cage organized the first happening and Rauschenberg painted his series of black and white paintings.
