Abstract (en)
Observes that both Greenberg and Rosenberg conceived of the Abstract Expressionist artist as the tragic Jew of American art, trapped between autonomy and assimilation; Rosenberg saw the choice facing the American artist as between "true" and "false self," while Greenberg saw it as between being avant-garde or kitsch; and argues that these views persist in the art criticism of the following generation, with Fried and Krauss celebrating the alienated, "true self," avant-garde side; and Alloway and Lippard coming down on the side of "false self" and kitsch.
