Considers developments in art and culture over the 20th c., noting that the pervasiveness of ideology has led to the replacement of the sensitive appreciation of works of art with mainly ethical or political criteria for the evaluation of their validity. Notes links between communism and the avant-garde, both of which were fiercely exclusionary and insistent on an ideal; and draws attention to negative effects of the scission between contemporary art and the art of the past.
