An outsider to architecture discusses recent examples of professional self-criticism in architecture in America; takes note of the challenge to architectural theory to develop evaluations of practice that do not turn on whether architecture transmits social ideologies through its peculiar disciplinary apparatus but, rather, how architecture plays a disciplinary and power-constructing role in the structuring of social space.
