Describes the site organization at S. Paul's cathedral, London, where in the 1630s Jones undertook the task of refacing the Gothic structure. Notes that practical site constraints influenced Jones's design at least as much as theoretical objectives; throws light on Jones's relationship with his assistant, John Webb, who oversaw much of the day-to-day work, and illustrates Jones's use of craftsmen to make and amend models in perfecting his designs on-site. Studies the accounts in order to reinterpret surviving drawings and contemporary views.
