Study of the roundels with profile portraits of Roman emperors, based on Roman coins, in the margins of the manuscript of Giovanni de Matociis's Historiae imperiales (Rome, Vatican, Biblioteca vaticana, MS Chigi J.VII.259); argues that these were the source for the portraits of Roman emperors by Altichiero originally in the Loggia di Cansignorio of the Palazzo del governo, Verona, now in the Museo degli affreschi; and proposes that it was through Petrarch that Altichiero knew the manuscript. Concludes that the motif of medallions with Roman imperial portraits entered Italian art through Altichiero, and considers the diffusion of the motif in art of the 15th c.
