Discusses the iconography and arrangement of the capital frieze of the western portal which presents a new subject--the narrative life of the Virgin, in monumental form in France for the first time. Observing the new centrality of the Virgin in gothic imagery, the author examines the local cult of the Virgin as it was practiced at Chartres. Relates the images of the frieze to the folkloric cult of the cathedral.
