Abstract (en)
Seeks to elucidate Kinsey's use of erotic, sexually explicit, and pornographic photography by examining his methodologies of collecting; publishes a selection of 19th and 20th c. images to suggest the breadth and diversity of the archive of the Kinsey Institute (Bloomington), which now consists of over 75,000 photographs. Seeks to locate Kinsey's interest in the photograph as both sexological document and source of visual pleasure, focusing on the juncture of his concern with eroticism and his taxonomic system, which Bataille characterized as "mechanical classification".
