Abstract (en)
Places Atget's petits métiers series of images of Parisian street peddlers (1898-1899) in the tradition of the iconography of the Cris de Paris, and argues that they are populist because they perpetuate the stereotype of the street peddler, dependent upon romanticized notions of urban poverty; and because, as images of archaic remnants of preindustrial society, they appealed to sentiments associated with populist nationalism. Notes how the series was adapted to schematic woodcuts and mass-produced postcards, and appropriated by popular culture.
