Abstract (en)
Looks at the Medici pietre dure collection in the Museo degli Argenti (Florence), which can be divided into two distinct groups. One consists of a series of massive vases in onyx, sardonyx, amethyst or jasper, from the ancient world of Rome, and other countries bordering on the Mediterranean. They are mounted--if at all--in silver-gilt, but their mounts are rarely contemporary: most were added by Florentine goldsmiths when the vases entered the Medici collection in the 15th c. The second group is much larger and consists of vases executed in the second half of the 16th c., either in Milan or in the Grand Ducal workshops of Florence. Their mounts are mostly contemporary with the vases.
