Abstract (en)
Identifies the ship depicted on a blue and white delftware bowl (author's collection) which is inscribed "SUCCESS TO THE DEVONSHIRE" and "Iohn Robinson, Born December 30th 1760, Baptiz'd Jan 7th 1761." Recounts the history of the Devonshire, a Royal Navy warship launched in 1745 and broken up in 1772. The author has not been able to identify the John Robinson of the inscription, but argues his connection to the Devonshire must have been strong to warrant commemorating his birth in this way.
