Abstract (en)
This book proposes a reconsideration of the received tradition of modern art and its history. It draws upon the established critical lineage of modern art, well-known figures, and frequently referred-to texts. It is a review in two senses--a survey and a reexamination--of that received tradition. Very simply, this book puts forth a meta-critical reexamination of canonical 19th-20th c. works: anthologized texts and the images that form the bases of survey courses. Drucker's assumption is that it is precisely through such anthologies, collections and selections that such a tradition has been codified. She organizes her approach around three themes: attitudes toward the space (social, literal, metaphorical) of modernism as representation; assumptions about the ontology of the object (from aesthetic formalism to deconstructionist interpretation); and theories of the production of subjectivity (from artist and viewer to subject position).
