Abstract
(en)
History of the revival of traditional crafts in Appalachia in the 1920s and 1930s, including weaving, quilts, basketry, woodcarving and pottery. Discusses the role of social reformers and the missionary movement in initiating the revival by developing cottage industries (such as Allanstand) and founding craft centers and schools (Berea College, Arrowmont, Penland, and John C. Campbell Folk School). Notes that by the late 1920s the focus of the crafts revival had shifted from social-reform work to independent, self-supporting craft industries, leading to the formation of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild in 1930 to promote and market crafts.
