Investigates Matisse's artistic development through three metaphors of representation: expansion, circulation and tension. Considers his use of color as well as his writings on light and color throughout his career, and discusses his changing relationship with impressionism, neoimpressionism, fauvism, and cubism (especially the works of Picasso). Seeks to characterize the way that Matisse's paintings are meant to operate with respect to the viewer, through the flat application of color, compositional manipulation, and the choice of subject matter.
