Reviews the traveling exhibition of late 19th and early 20th c. French paintings from the Barnes Collection (Merion), first held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington; describes the aims and values of the collector, Albert Barnes, who believed in an ideal image of art and in strict control of its presentation; notes that the exhibition is completely dominated by commercialism and marketing values, neglecting Barnes and violating the spirit in which he formed the collection.
