A letter written in Nov 1545 to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese by the Modenese antiquarian Pellegrino di Leuti sheds new light on Paul III's interest in antique gems and helps to document a hitherto overlooked collection of cameos owned by the countess of Caiazzo, Barbara Gonzaga. (Includes an appendix with indirect evidence concerning the collection of antique gems and sculpture owned by Barbara's brother-in-law, Cardinal Federigo Sanseverino).
