Comments on the work of American painter Cy Twombly, considering the implications of his use of words in his works, and the relationship between his graffiti style and Pollock's painting. Argues against interpretations of Twombly's art as classicizing and erudite, evoking the writings of Barthes on the way Twombly's paintings generate meaning.
