Considers the treatment of issues of identity and marginalization in three exhibitions held in the year of the Columbian Quincentenary: the 1993 Whitney Biennial (New York); Lucy Lippard's exhibition of late 19th and early 20th c. photographs by and of Native Americans, entitled Partial recall, at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia; and La Frontera/the Border: art about the Mexico/United States border experience at the Centro Cultural de la Raza and the Museum of Contemporary Art, both in San Diego.
