Surveys Day's life and work, reassessing his achievement in photography; seeks to establish that he was not an eccentric or obsessive dabbler but an independent and cultivated Anglo-American intellectual and a daring and original artist within the pictorialist tradition. Also notes his philanthropic activities, and his images of immigrant boys.
