Abstract (en)
Catalogue for an exhibition of more than 600 Exquisite Corpse drawings solicited by the Drawing Center since Apr 1991. Artists agreed to create collaborative drawings according to a parlor game which was played by the early-20th c. Surrealists. The "corpse" is a single sheet of paper, divided according to the number of players into segments that roughly correspond to the human body, e.g., head/torso/legs for three players. As the game is played, each artist, working in turn, completes a section and conceals the work before passing it on to the next artist. When all the sections are finished, the drawing is unfolded and the Exquisite Corpse is born.
