Survey of historical archaeology in Philadelphia, based on over 300 reports of ca.150 investigations conducted in the city and environs since the late 1940s; describes and speculates about over 50 specific sites, and provides a geographic history of the area since the end of the last ice age. The reviewer finds that the meat of the book is in the descriptions of the sites, and that the matter-of-fact record of physical remains of both building and artifact offers a point of view on architectural history that is not habitual.
