Collection of six essays on Renaissance architecture and patrons, mainly in Italy; subjects are: the Rome of Nicholas V and Alberti; Laurentian Florence, Rome under Leo X, and Venice and Milan in the late 15th and early 16th cs.; the facade of S. Lorenzo (Florence), the construction of S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini (Rome), and the history of S. Marco (Florence); the effects of the Sack of 1527 on Rome; the Palace of Charles V in Granada; and the domestic architecture of Sansovino in Venice. The reviewer emphasizes Tafuri's qualities as an architectural historian.
