On Louis de Silvestre's oil sketch of the Crucifixion (1734), recently acquired by the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. The sketch is a study for the artist's large version, also in the Gemäldegalerie. Focuses on the depiction of clouds and light in both pictures, and transcribes the lengthy inscription on the larger canvas describing how the effect was intended to replicate what the artist observed in the evening sky of 19 May 1734.
