Theoretical and semiotic discussion of the artistic innovations of Duchamp, especially his readymades, and their influence on later conceptual artists. Examines the roles of the artist, the spectator and the museum in the evolution of conceptual art from Duchamp to the 1960s, and in particular considers the work of Marcel Broodthaers.
