Argues that Tiepolo's painting of ca.1735 (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland) was strongly influenced by the conversation pieces of Watteau, known to the Italian painter through a set of prints after Watteau owned by Rosalba Carriera. Also relates the painting to Venetian poesie, cabinet pictures for private enjoyment and reflection upon such themes as the passage of time, the vanity of earthly things, or the place of human love in nautre's scheme.
