Abstract (en)
Examines the various influences on the drawings of the French artist, active in the 1880s. Notes that he was acquainted with and exhibited with the major impressionists, and learned about Japanese art through a friend who owned a collection of Japanese art and objects such as dolls, which recur in Somm's drawings. In his later years he shows the impact of symbolist imagery in his own choice of subjects, which frequently feature women dominating miniature male figures.
