Abstract (en)
Examines a variety of ancient monuments, images and texts, dating from the turn of the first centuries B.C. and A.D. to the 6th c. in the light of how they were viewed, comparing the changes both in their formal characteristics and in the ways they were looked at over the period. Concludes with an examination of the process of this change from Classical naturalism towards spiritual abstraction, the genesis of a specifically Christian exegetic mode of viewing, and how it resembled and how it differed from the kinds of initiate viewing in pagan antiquity out of which it arose.
