The buildings now known as Bessie Surtees House are formed from a 20th c. amalgamation of two important houses which became known by the surnames of the merchant families who lived in them in the 17th c. - Surtees House and Milbank House. Describes the structural histories, as well as fittings and furnishings since the 15th c.
