Proposing that the statuette embodies both avant-garde and popular dimensions, the author analyzes different forms of material and genre, attitudes to serial manufacture, and the aesthetics of the art form, in particular as an expression of la vie moderne, and its reflection in contemporary values. The broad survey includes discussion of works by the major sculptors Kai Nielsen, Jean Gauguin, Gerhard Henning and Svend Rathsack.
