Discusses the character and importance of Klinger's influence on Munch. Demonstrates that Munch, through his close connection with Christian Krohg, was very well informed about Klinger's graphic art by the early 1880s--long before his first visit to Berlin in 1892--since Krohg had a significant collection of Klinger's graphic works. Through thematic comparisons, the author shows that Klinger's highly personal graphic art became an important influence on Munch's subject matter and pictorial conception.
