This publication is an introduction to the museum (founded ca.1829) and its collections. The book is organized thematically to reflect the variety of concerns and aesthetic visions that have shaped American art over the past three centuries. The nine thematic divisions are: early America; tradition; 20th c. life; people; spirit and religion; folk art; modern art; craft objects; and contemporary voices.
