Abstract (en)
Reexamines the origins and contexts of three pieces of Spanish colonial liturgical silver in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, previously thought to have been made in Spain: the Friedsam monstrance, made in Lima 1646-1649; the Friedsam chalice, made in Mexico in the mid-17th c.; and the late 18th c. Clearwater chalice, also made in Mexico. Focuses on the Friedsam monstrance, placing it in a group of Peruvian monstrances and stressing its importance as the missing link in the transmission of Spanish peninsular style to the Andean region and in the evolution of the Peruvian Baroque.
