The restoration of S. Romano, Lucca, occasioned the removal of the remains of 15 of the 24 ceramic bowls (bacini) of the graffita arcaicatirrenica type, which had been inserted in the facade in the late 13th c. During their removal, it was possible to establish the steps that were followed in inserting the ceramics into the decorative system and the masonry, including the distinctive use of cotton twine to hold the bowls in place while the mortar set.
