Analyzes Kelly's paintings, begun in the 1950s, in terms of the history of mural and large-scale decorative painting in Europe and the United States in the 20th c. Discusses the influence of Matisse's cut-outs, the politics of mural painting in the first half of the century, the perceived relationship between Kelly's geometric wall collages and paintings and Mondrian's later paintings, Kelly's interest in the links between painting and architecture, and his role in importing to New York Parisian modes of avant-garde painting.
