On the basis of documentary evidence, proves that the large and elaborate porcelain service made by the French manufactory and delivered to the czarina in 1778 was duly paid for by 1781, contrary to anecdotes which claim that the czarina did not pay the debt until some time during the revolution. Suggests that other factors, such as negotiations about the total cost of the service and the simultaneous discovery that the director of the Sèvres manufactory was embezzling funds, may have led to the apocryphal stories.
