Describes and analyzes the decorative initials of a group of illuminated manuscripts (Rome, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana; Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, 7th-8th cs.) from the monastery of S. Colombano, Bobbio (founded 613). Suggests that most of the manuscripts in the group were produced at the Bobbio scriptorium, and that the earliest (those from the early 7th c.) show the strong influence of insular manuscript illumination.
