Argues that 17th c. Dutch painting, and genre and still life in particular, are ambiguous in that they allow some freedom in interpretation for the beholder. Relates this phenomenon to the Protestant disregard for art, and the ethos (as opposed to pathos) with which the paintings address the viewer.
