Contains seven essays on the marble monument made by Danish artist H.V. Bissen in 1862. The lion, celebrating a Danish victory over German forces in 1850, was created as a symbol of rising Danish national identity and placed in Flensburg, Germany (then part of southern Denmark). After the Danish defeat by Germany in 1864, the monument was moved to Berlin, from where it was returned to Denmark in 1945 and placed in the courtyard of the Tøjhusmuseet, Copenhagen.
