Studies an emerald attached to the cuff of the alb made in Palermo for Guglielmo II of Sicily in 1181 (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien). Explains that it is actually composed of two fragments fitted together, and discusses the results of scientific analysis. Suggests that the larger of the fragments is from India, Pakistan, or Afghanistan, while the smaller fragment probably comes from the Ural mountains. Concludes that the fitted fragments represent a repair to the alb that cannot be dated.
