Abstract (en)

Considers the pros and cons of transporting works of art for temporary exhibitions. Discusses issues of packing, transportation, climatic changes, and frequency of loan-related damage requiring restoration. Examines the politics of lending, the role of loan exhibitions in attracting museum audiences, and the polarization between museum personnel and art historians, who in general advocate a generous lending policy, and conservators, who in general do not.
