Abstract (en)
Lewis identifies a large group of chests on frames as products of Randolph and Rowan counties ca.1795-1850. The Rowan type, ca.1795-1830, represents an 18th c. Anglo-American cabinetmaking tradition brought to the backcountry by immigrants from various parts of the American colonies and Great Britain. The Randolph type, an adaptation ca.1815-1850 of these earlier designs, can be considered an excellent example of the American vernacular. Some Rowan tables and Randolph blanket chests are also discussed.
